What to Do With an Inherited Stamp Collection

You do not need to identify, sort, or remove anything immediately. A few careful first steps will preserve the collection while you decide whether to keep, appraise, sell, or donate it.

Start by preserving what is already there

Keep stamps, albums, stock books, envelopes, postcards, notes, and catalogs together. Store them in a dry room away from direct sunlight, basements, attics, and rapid temperature changes. Do not peel stamps from paper, use tape, laminate pages, or clean stamps. Original envelopes and handwritten notes can provide useful context.

Remove only unrelated private material

Look for financial records, current identification, family photographs, coins, currency, and other personal items that are clearly unrelated to the collection. Leave philatelic receipts, exhibition labels, dealer notes, and collecting correspondence in place until the collection has been reviewed.

Decide whether an appraisal is warranted

Most inherited collections have more educational or personal value than market value, but some deserve specialist attention. Consider an independent philatelic appraiser or established stamp dealer if the collection contains certificates of authenticity, very early material, extensive high-denomination mint stamps, specialized studies, or notes showing substantial purchases.

If donation is the right choice, we accept inherited collections in albums, stock books, glassines, boxes, or loose groups. You do not need to sort or organize them.
